Speaker
Dr Mamadou Ka
Dr. Mamadou Ka is a keynote speaker and consultant in the area of leadership and educational diversity. He provides workshops on intercultural communication, conflict management, racism, invisible predjudice and cultural comptencies in a variety of settings (justice, education et health).
Dr. Ka is an assoicate professor in the Faculty of Arts (Political Science), as well as the Faculty of Education at University of Sainte-Boniface. He holds a doctorate of education in leadership and educational diversity from Simon Fraser University. He also has done doctoral studies in the areas of political science and international relations from Laval University. He is the recipient of the Diamond Jubiliee Medal from Queen Elizabeth II in 2012.
His interests lie in the areas of international relations, global politics and intercultural education. In the modern world, where borders are becoming are more open, people need need to be sensitive the to the cultures and values of others. This is especially true in education where teachers and students come from different cultures. Its important to understand oneself in relation to working with others.
In this series, participants will learn the following

- cultural models and their impact on the behaviour and interpersonal relationships between students and teachers

Intercultural communication During a Field Experience (Sept 1, 2020)
Panel discussion moderated by Dr. Chantal Viens (CSJ). Discussion with Dr. Mamoudou Ka from Université de Sainte-Boniface et Dr. Christine Connelly from OISE at University of Toronto. Panel focussed on 3 guiding questions:
- What is your definition of intercultural communication in the educational context?
- What are the essential elements that are part of intercultural communication during a field experience (student-teacher to mentor teacher relationship; student-teacher to practicum supervisor to mentor teacher relationship).
- What are barriers that could be created during a field experience that involve intercultural communication, and how to deal with them?
Communication in Diverse Contexts (Sept 10, 2019)
Presented by Jean-Daniel Tremblay. Diversity in school context takes on many forms. How do we communicate in such a diverse context (cultural, linguistic, affective, cognitive)? Participants in this workshop will discover ways of meeting the needs of students coming from diverse backgrounds.
