Théâtre à l’Ouest

Théâtre à l'Ouest is the student troupe of Campus Saint-Jean. It is directed by professor, actor and director Bernard Salva.

The troupe is committed to offering an open and friendly Francophonie, respectful of the Campus' theatrical past and eager for new perspectives, multicultural in the image of Edmonton' s new Francophone landscape, and which highlights a theater that is both intimate and open to the world, playful and carnal. We have had a wealth of different backgrounds on our stage for many years. Our theater also claims to be a privileged space for the jubilation of the French language on campus in all its variations. Without forgetting the question of space and all the visual apparatus of the show with the ambition of neat and sober scenographies.

The works that are chosen must question the world, shake us up, as well as delight us. Over the years, many Canadian authors have been honored (Michel Tremblay, Daniel Danis, Suzanne Lebeau, Carole Fréchette, Wajdi Mouawad, Dominic Champagne), but we have also traveled extensively in both classical and contemporary theater (French, Russian, Iranian, Greek and German authors).

Théâtre à l'Ouest, through the medium of theater, also wishes to offer the students of the Campus a unique collective human experience. Our identity is this dimension of plural theater, beyond the individual performance. There is no audition. The theater is open to all students. Each year the September-October part is devoted to creating a group and exploring techniques by working on multiple exercises. In November, the annual production is decided upon and is presented each year at the end of March (five performances), one of which brings together the high schools of Edmonton in conjunction with several teachers who have collaborated with us faithfully for several years.
