Project Submission

Description and Requirements of the project (M EDU 900)

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) specifies that students in a project-based program must complete a synthesis/research project before finishing their program. According to FGSR policies, this project must demonstrate that the candidate can synthesize a variety of information acquired throughout the program. The term that FGSR uses to describe this project is a "capping exercise," also known as a capstone.

This project is a substantial amount of work in research and/or creation; it consists of a synthesis of important questions tackled by the student in their, her or his graduate program. This work thus requires the integration of question of language, culture and education to reflect the objectives of the graduate program. The nature of the project will be determined by the student, in consultation with the supervisor.

The research project can be:

reflective, explicative or synthetic in nature;
a piece of descriptive, documentary, historic, bibliographic or action-based research;
a contribution to material development with an explanation of context and a theoretical justification for the necessity of the material created.

Requirements for the project

The project should take approximately 80 hours of study or work (equivalent to 3 crédits). Depending on the exact project, it may take longer than 80 hours.
The project must be a written document of at least 30 pages, double-spaced and typed. This must not include any Appendices.
The content and structure of the document should be developed in consultation with the supervisor. In theory, the project should have an introduction (wherein the student contextualizes their, her or his research question and elaborates on the objectives), a description of the problem/question(s), a theoretical framework, the methodologies and a conclusion.
Non-traditional projects must include an appendix and a text explaining the nature of the project, justifying the choice of format.
If the student wishes to use published or unpublished materials (including tests, songs, teaching models, teaching units, etc), they, she or he must receive written permission from the original content creator. This written permission must be included in an appendix.
All documents that will be made publicly available, such as ethics proposals, CAP admissions (Cooperative Activities Program), school council letters, parent/teacher letters, and the final version of the project must be written in formal, academic French and checked for syntax.
The student is responsible for paying any fees for linguistic editors/reviewers and for photocopies of any necessary documents.

The format of the project

The recommended guide for students is the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2009), Sixth Edition. Washington, D.C.

For the final version of the project, the student must use the following format:

Size 12 font.
The following pages must be included at the beginning of the project in the following order:
- Title page which includes the title and submission semester (Fall or Winter);
- ABSTRACT in English (max 150 words);
- RÉSUMÉ en français (max 150 words);
- DEDICATION(S) (facultative);
- ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS;
- TABLE OF CONTENTS;
- LIST OF TABLES (facultative).

The left margin must be 3.8 cm (1½"). All other margins must be 2.5 cm (1").

Final evaluation of the project

The project will be evaluated by the supervisor (for the MEDU 900 course). However, the supervisor or student may request a second evaluator. The supervisor (and evaluator if applicable) will either approve the project or not approve the project - an approved project must then be submitted.

Submission of the project at Campus Saint-Jean

Deadline: Sep 15 (for Fall convocation) or April 3rd (for Spring convocation)

Once the project is completed and approved by the supervisor, the student must save it as a PDF and send it in an email to csj.etudessup@ualberta.ca

The student must also send , in a separate PDF, the two following documents

Library Release Form (signed by the student).

Responsibilities of the Supervisor when approving the project

The professor/supervisor of M EDU 900 must go to the admissions office to give a grade of "CR" on the "Grade Report Form ».

To be submitted by the supervisor:

Report of Completion of Course Based Master's Degree
The project acceptance page for the Master of Education program (signed by the supervisor).
Inscrire la note « CR » dans le système informatique. Si votre étudiant.e a reçu un incomplet "IN" pour le M EDU 900 non complété à la session précédente, vous aurez à envoyer un courriel au bureau des études supérieures à l'adresse suivante : csj.etudessup@ualberta.ca avec le nom + prénom + numéro d'étudiant.e. à 7 chiffres+ M EDU 900 + session et indication que votre étudiant.e. doit recevoir un CR afin que la coordinatrice des études supérieures puisse préparer le processus de changement de note.
Dans le cas ou l`activité de synthèse ne pourrait pas être complétée au cours de la session choisie, le superviseur devra vérifier en avance à quelle date est-ce que l'étudiant doit terminer son programme et le cas échéant devra rentrer la note de IN dans le système informatique.
