Course Descriptions
EPE 100 - The game
In this course, students will learn about the importance of play in the development of young children. The student will develop plans to facilitate the implementation of learning-rich activities in all kinds of play-based environments.
EPE 101 - Observation, planning and intervention
Child observation is the basis of educational intervention in daycare centers. This stage requires knowledge of different observation methodologies and tools. Planning supports the interventions of educational teams. This course will suggest different observation and intervention strategies. It will also give you an initial insight into the conditions required for effective planning that respects children's interests.
EPE 102 - Professionalism in the workplace
This course enables the student to explore the values, attitudes and code of ethics of the profession, and to understand the commitment involved in respectful and professional interactions with young children and families, particularly in a minority setting in a context of cultural diversity. The student will analyze roles and responsibilities, conflict resolution and the importance of teamwork. Government standards and their application will also be analyzed.
EPE 110 - Curriculum 1
This course explores curriculum planning based on the Envol pedagogical framework. This pedagogical framework will be explored using an interactive, play-based approach. Students will learn strategies to support children's development in preschool, school and community settings.
EPE 120 - Child development I
This course will provide the student with an understanding of child development from birth to age five. The course explores the four domains of child development: cognitive, language, motor, social-emotional and spiritual. The link between theory and its application in practice will be explored.
EPE 150 - Stage 1
The first internship focuses on observation and hands-on experience working with children. The student will be able to begin preparing programming based on her observations of children's needs and interests, and to integrate early childhood philosophy into her practice.
EPE 111 - Curriculum II
This course explores curriculum planning in literature, mathematics and science, as well as its implementation and evaluation. These areas are explored in a holistic and interactive approach. The course also includes the Aboriginal storytelling approach as a foundation for the Aboriginal perspective in education. Students will learn strategies to support children's development, whether in preschool, school or a variety of community settings.
EPE 121 - Child development II
This course will provide the student with an understanding of child development from the ages of six to twelve. It addresses the physical, social, emotional and intellectual changes that occur during this period in human life. The student will analyze the theoretical perspectives that contribute to our understanding of child development. They will also analyze the implications for the school environment.
EPE 130 - Health, safety and nutrition
The student will analyze the regulations surrounding the health and nutritional needs of young children by participating in practical applications in an early childhood environment. Practices and experiences for the development of healthy attitudes adapted to children will be discussed. Hygiene rules and their application will also be described.
EPE 140 - Interpersonal relations and communications
Students will have the opportunity to improve their interpersonal skills in order to maintain positive human relationships, whatever the context. They will develop a better understanding of self-esteem, as well as the skills needed to resolve interpersonal conflicts when interacting with other individuals, alone or in a group. The importance of intercultural sensitivity in a highly diverse language environment will be one of the cornerstones of this course. Throughout the course, students will also learn to communicate professionally with children, teammates and parents alike.
EPE 142 - The child, the family and the community
In this introductory course on the family, students will learn about the various theoretical concepts of the family, diversity, economics and social trends (culture, values and traditions) that influence a family's ability to survive in society. Students will also analyze major family issues and their effects on children.
EPE 151 - Stage II
The second practicum allows students to deepen their practical experience of working with children. They use their observations of children's needs and interests to plan how to integrate early childhood philosophy into their work experience.
EPE 201 - Organizing a day-care service
This course analyzes the organizational structure of the early childhood environment. Students will explore policies and procedures specific to the environment, while taking into account the needs of children, staff, parents and the community. At the end of this course, students will have a better understanding of the role of leadership in the context of early childhood in a linguistic minority setting.
EPE 205 - Behavior management
The course includes an analysis of attitudes, values and essential skills in a holistic developmental approach that supports children's social and emotional development. The student will be able to observe the dynamics of behavior. This course also covers various strategies to support the development of children's social, emotional and pro-social skills. It will also introduce group management strategies.
EPE 212 - Emerging curriculum
This course will enable students to use their observation skills to create strategies for developing meaningful relationships with children. Having acquired an image of the child, the student will be skilled in her role as educator, co-learner, co-researcher and co-constructor of the child's development in a context of French language and cultural diversity.
EPE 222 - Child development III
This course will enable students to understand the development of children facing learning challenges related to their social skills. Intervention strategies for behavioral challenges will also be discussed.
EPE 225 - Integration of children with special needs I
By examining the categories and characteristics of various exceptional needs, this course introduces the student to the special needs that children and young people may have. The student will explore relevant ways of supporting children and young people with special needs and their families.
EPE 250 - Stage III
The objective of this internship is to put in place strategies that promote quality childcare services by ensuring collaboration with families and community partners, with a view to inclusion.
EPE 203 - The foundations of early childhood education
In this course, students will explore the historical, philosophical and social influences that form the foundations of early childhood education programs. The course will also analyze the views of early advocates (educators, philosophers, theorists) and the social conditions of the time that led to the deployment of a wide variety of programs. Current issues, particularly as they relate to minority communities, will also be analyzed.
EPE 213 - Language and literacy development
This course will explore the expressive and receptive language development of the general child in a minority context. Students will analyze how preschool environments can support children in their understanding and use of the language systems around them. Students will learn how to facilitate children's language development in all its dimensions.
EPE 226 - Integration of children with special needs II
This course will explore strategies to help people with special needs succeed in inclusive and other environments. Students will learn about special needs, assessment, planning and resources for people with special needs.
EPE 230 - Minority French and early childhood
This course will lead students to question their approach to learning French and discovering Francophone culture for children in a Francophone minority context. Students will develop a bank of tools to support the learning of French, with an emphasis on the child's educational environment. The student will also be called upon to use technology in research and activity planning.
EPE 242 - Working with families
This course will enable students to understand and use a family-centered approach in a culturally diverse early childhood education context. Students will explore the stages of life from an Aboriginal perspective. From a managerial perspective, they will learn to make practical suggestions in a collaborative approach to overcoming the many challenges they will face in their work with families.
EPE 251 - Stage 4
This internship will give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in daycare management. Among other things, she will have to demonstrate her ability to manage a team of educators, suggest ways of resolving conflicts and organize a team meeting. Finally, she must demonstrate her ability to support educators in their weekly planning.
