Campus Accessibility

Buildings

Access

Most of the newer or renovated public buildings on the Augustana Campus have physically accessible ground level entrances with door paddles, elevators, and accessible washrooms. However, some classroom and residential buildings do not. Please contact Proctoring, Accessibility and Student Success (PASS) for more information.

Students who need classrooms to be relocated should contact PASS as soon as possible.

Fire Alarms

Auditory and visual fire alarms are installed in the hallways of many buildings, but not all. Work continues in this area to ensure that visual alarm systems are installed in all areas of the University, including washrooms.

Classrooms

Most classrooms on the University of Alberta Augustana Campus are physically accessible for students with mobility disabilities, and reserved seating can be arranged for most classrooms upon request.

If students encounter any difficulties accessing their classrooms, they should contact staff at Accessibility Resources. Arrangements can be made to change the location of the class to one that is accessible. Students who need classrooms to be relocated should contact PASS as soon as possible.

Grounds

It is University of Alberta practice to clear snow or obstructions in a timely manner. For information about snow removal or other grounds-related concerns regarding accessibility, contact Facilities & Operations at 780-679-1618

Emergency Procedures

These emergency evacuation procedures are intended for anyone with a permanent or temporary disability who is unable to evacuate a building via the stairwell. Please contact Proctoring, Accessibility and Student Success (PASS) staff if you have specific concerns.

Precautions

Individuals are expected to take responsibility for their personal safety. Please take the following steps to ensure that you are prepared for an emergency situation:

  • Familiarize yourself with the building(s) you frequent. Identify yourself to your instructors / supervisors.

  • In each building, there is a system of fire wardens who are responsible for the evacuation of all individuals. Contact the fire wardens at the beginning of each term with your class/study schedule in these buildings.

  • Initiate a "buddy" system with a classmate to assist in case of emergency.

In an emergency situation

  1. Proceed to the nearest fire exit stairwell and, provided there is no immediate or apparent danger, wait adjacent to the stairwell until the main flow of people have passed. Fire exit stairwells are fire rated and provide a safe refuge area — persons waiting in the stairwell will be reasonably safe until evacuated. It is advisable to have your "buddy" wait with you.

  2. Make your presence known to the fire warden in the area. Fire wardens can be identified by the red vests with florescent yellow stripes that they wear during an emergency evacuation.

  3. If there is no fire warden in the area, locate the nearest telephone, call 780-608-2905, and inform them of your exact location.

  4. If there is no telephone, ask someone who is evacuating to inform the responding emergency services (e.g. fire department, fire warden, University Protective Services, etc.) of your location.

Under no circumstance should elevators be used to evacuate, unless assisted by the fire department.

By remembering these simple procedures, you will be able to better react during an emergency.
