Korah Sanderson, a passionate educator, discovered her calling through childhood games of "pretend" school and a strong desire to help others academically. This passion steered her towards the Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) program at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. Originally intending to study at North Campus, her decision was solidified after participating in the "student for a day" program and experiencing Augustana's unique atmosphere firsthand. 

Korah treasures memories of the vibrant Welcome Weekend (now Admitted Student Day) at Augustana, where she formed lasting friendships and immersed herself in campus life, igniting a sense of belonging and community.

"I instantly fell in love with Augustana and the city of Camrose and knew this is where I was meant to be," says Korah.

Beyond her studies, Korah was actively involved in the Augustana Students' Association (ASA), where she took part in organizing events such as Augustana's Got Talent and Wellness Week. She encourages fellow students to engage in campus activities, emphasizing their significance in enhancing the university experience.

As she approaches convocation, Korah plans to celebrate with loved ones, capturing cherished moments and eagerly anticipating the Augustana tradition of ringing the bell of the centenary sculpture on campus. Looking ahead, she aspires to start her teaching career, fueled by support from professors, family and friends.

What led you to choose your current area of study, and why the U of A Augustana for your studies?

I knew I always wanted to pursue a career in education. I played "pretend" school with my sister for a big portion of my childhood and I have always had a willingness to support and help others in their academics. So why Augustana? Well, I am from the Edmonton area, and initially I planned to do my entire BEd degree at North Campus. Through some research, I discovered Augustana had a BSc/BEd program. I signed up to be a "student for a day" and was shown around campus by a current Augustana student. I instantly fell in love with Augustana and the city of Camrose and knew this is where I was meant to be.

What is one of your favourite memories from your time at Augustana?

One of my favourite memories was attending Welcome Weekend prior to starting my first year at Augustana. During this weekend is where I made almost all of my university friendships. We participated in a campus-wide scavenger hunt, played games, ate food in the Dining Hall and got to spend a night in residence. Welcome Weekend made me fall in love with the Augustana student experience!

Tell us about your favourite professor/lecturer and/or class.

Bill Hackborn was one of my favourite professors who taught me my intro calc classes. He continuously supported me throughout the course and provided one-on-one help whenever I needed it. He also had a lot of funny jokes up his sleeve! Gerhard Lotz was another one of my favourite professors. He made intermediate calc and my advanced physics lab course very engaging. I admired Gerhard's willingness to go out of his way to help me and other students whenever they needed.

Did you take on any leadership roles while you were a student, either on campus or in the Camrose community? 

I was on the Augustana Students' Association in my second and third year at Augustana. In my second year, I was elected as the second-year representative. In my third year, I was elected as the vice-president communications. During my time on the ASA, I planned and hosted Augustana's Got Talent and Wellness Week, ran the ASA social media platforms, helped increase student engagement with ASA-provided services, and provided a voice on behalf of students. I will never forget the memories I made being a council member on the ASA. I would strongly encourage anyone who is interested in becoming more involved in the Augustana community and student governance to run for a position on the ASA!

How did you get where you are today?

A lot of tears and happiness got me to where I am today. Choosing a major in math and physics was not the easiest route, but the friendships I made throughout my years at Augustana and my involvement with student life on campus was what got me through and motivated me to be the person I am today. I truly could have not gotten to where I am today without the support from my professors, my family and my friends.

What advice do you have for current and future students?

Don't be hesitant to get involved with student groups and activities happening within the Augustana community. Attend events hosted by ASA and clubs, go to Vikings games, attend Chaplaincy’s Soup Supper, the list goes on! Your academics are important, but being involved in events and extracurriculars within Augustana will greatly enhance your student experience for the better, I promise!

How do you plan on celebrating convocation?

I plan to celebrate convocation with my family and friends, take lots of photos, eat lots of food and I also cannot wait to ring the bell!

What's next after graduation?

I plan to go on a couple of trips this summer and I will also be applying for teaching jobs to hopefully start my official teaching career in the fall!
