What Is a mental health emergency?

A mental health emergency is behaviour or activity by an individual that puts them or others in immediate risk of harm.
Call 911 and follow instructions.

If You or someone you know is experiencing a mental health emergency

If there is an imminent threat to life or safety

  1. Call 911 and follow instructions.
  2. Remain calm. Comfort the individual if it is safe to do so.
  3. Remain with the individual until emergency responders arrive.

If there is no imminent threat to life or safety

Contact Helping Individuals at Risk (780‑492‑4372) or the University Health Centre (780‑492‑2612).

Additional 24 hour support

Offer to accompany the individual to seek help.
