What are hazardous materials?

Hazardous materials include chemicals and substances that can pose a risk to human health and the environment.

Alert others in the immediate area.

When you are able, call 911 and/or Protective Services (780‑492‑5050).

Uncontrolled release of hazardous materials

An uncontrolled release of hazardous materials can pose a risk to human health and the environment. Accidental exposure to a hazardous substance may also require an emergency response.

In case of a large spill (more than 5L)

Alert others in the immediate area.

Assist any injured people if it is safe to do so.

Call 911 and then Protective Services (780‑492‑5050).

If instructed, pull the fire alarm to evacuate the building.

Go to the building muster point.

Do NOT re-enter the building until permitted to do so by emergency responders.

In case of a gas leak

Exit the room immediately. Do NOT turn electrical switches on or off.

Call 911 and then Protective Services (780‑492‑5050).

If instructed, leave the building, alerting others as you go.

Do NOT re-enter the building until permitted to do so by emergency responders.

Exposure to hazardous materials

If you have been exposed to a hazardous chemical

Flush the exposed area with water for at least 15 minutes (using an emergency shower or another source of continuous spray).

Call the Poison & Drug Information Service (1‑800‑332‑1414) and follow instructions.

If you have been exposed to radioactive or biohazardous materials

Contact the Control Centre (780‑492‑5555) and request a call back from Health, Safety & Environment.

Seek medical treatment immediately.
