Faces of WISEST: Sandra Renihan

WISEST has held a special place in my heart ever since I was given the opportunity to attend the WISEST CHOICES conference when I was in sixth grade, and was exposed, for the first time in my life, to a group of women scientists and engineers demonstrating their work. I was forever inspired, and my world was forever changed.

After that day, I spent secondary school with the idea that I would pursue a general sciences degree. However, my plans were challenged when many of my high school classmates (all of whom were male and many of whom regularly sought my help with their homework!) told me they were planning to apply to the Faculty of Engineering. Even after CHOICES, I had always assumed that I was not smart enough to be an engineer, but I then realized – if they could do it, why couldn’t I?

I ended up in the Civil Engineering program at the University of Alberta and fell in love with the field of structural engineering. My competitive nature fully took over, I dedicated myself to my studies, and I ended up graduating top of my class. I went on to acquire a Masters of Engineering in Structural Engineering and landed my dream job at DIALOG working on the structural design of amazing local institutions. Lately I have been working more as a project manager and have developed a new passion for working on the design of large-scale urban streetscapes and spaces.

WISEST gave me the gift of inspiration and changed the course of my life. I try hard to pay this forward, especially by continuing to support WISEST and their outstanding programs, so the next generation of young women will realize that they can do it too.

WISEST occupe une place particulière dans mon cœur depuis que j’ai eu l’occasion d’assister à la conférence CHOICES, lorsque j’étais en sixième année, et que j’ai été pour la première fois de ma vie en présence d’un groupe de femmes scientifiques et ingénieures qui présentaient leur travail. J’ai été inspirée pour toujours et mon monde a changé à jamais.

Après ce jour, j’ai passé l’école secondaire avec l’idée de poursuivre des études générales en sciences. Cependant, mes plans ont été remis en question lorsque plusieurs de mes camarades de classe (tous de sexe masculin et qui demandaient régulièrement de l’aide pour leurs devoirs!) m’ont dit qu’ils prévoyaient de s’inscrire à la faculté d’ingénierie. Même après CHOICES, j’avais toujours pensé que je n’étais pas assez intelligente pour devenir ingénieure, mais j’ai alors réalisé que s’ils pouvaient le faire, pourquoi pas moi?

Je me suis retrouvée dans le programme de génie civil de l’Université de l’Alberta et je suis tombée amoureuse du domaine de l’ingénierie structurelle. Mon caractère compétitif a pris le dessus, je me suis consacré à mes études et je suis sorti premier de ma classe. J’ai ensuite obtenu une maîtrise en ingénierie structurelle et j’ai décroché le poste de mes rêves chez DIALOG, où je travaillais sur la conception d’espace et de paysage urbain à grande échelle.

WISEST m’a donné l’inspiration et a changé le cours de ma vie. Je m’efforce d’en profiter les autres, notamment en continuant à soutenir WISEST et ses programmes exceptionnels, afin que la prochaine génération de jeunes femmes se rende compte qu’elles peuvent elles aussi y arriver.
