Faces of WISEST: Elizabeth Chao

I participated in the WISEST summer research program (SRP) in 2016 which impacted my career choices in more ways than I could imagine. Although I have always wanted to pursue a medical field growing up, the invaluable interactions with my SRP peers and discussions with WISEST alumni opened my eyes to the field of engineering - which I had never considered as a possible career path. After high school, I decided to pursue a BSc in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta, with a minor in Art and Design. 

Since my summer research in 2016 in ecology, I was motivated towards undertaking more research in interdisciplinary fields despite having chosen engineering. I was able to be involved in research in the departments of biochemistry, physical therapy, and surgery throughout my undergraduate studies. These vast experiences allowed me to gain exposure to a wide range of areas and observe how mechanical engineering may be applied to interactions with the human body. I am eager to begin my graduate studies in 2022 in robotics for rehabilitation and assistive devices. 

My goal as a mechanical engineer is to have a positive impact on society through my designs. Having worked closely with physical and occupational therapists before, I understand the value of engaging patients through the rehabilitation process. Specifically, I would like to continue developing innovative technological devices to assist with improving the quality of life of those with disabilities.

Despite my WISEST SRP experience being in an area other than what I finally decided to follow, I hope WISEST will encourage other girls to explore STEM fields for years to come.

J’ai participé au programme de recherche d’été WISEST (SRP) en 2016, qui a eu un impact sur mes choix de carrière plus que je pouvais l’imaginer. Bien que j’ai toujours voulu poursuivre un domaine médical en grandissant, les interactions inestimables avec mes pairs du SRP et les discussions avec les anciens de WISEST m’ont ouvert les yeux sur le domaine de l’ingénierie - que je n’avais jamais considéré comme un cheminement de carrière possible. Après le secondaire, j’ai décidé de poursuivre des études en génie mécanique à l’Université de l’Alberta, avec une mineure en art et design.

Depuis mes recherches d’été en 2016 dans le domaine de l’écologie, j’ai été motivée pour entreprendre davantage de recherches dans des domaines interdisciplinaires, bien que j’ai choisi l’ingénierie. J’ai pu participer à des recherches dans les départements de biochimie, de physiothérapie et de chirurgie tout au long de mes études de premier cycle. Ces vastes expériences m’ont permis de me familiariser avec un large éventail de domaines et d’observer comment le génie mécanique peut être appliqué aux interactions avec le corps humain. Je suis enthousiaste de commencer mes études supérieures en 2022 dans le domaine de la robotique pour la réadaptation et les appareils d’assistance.

Mon objectif en tant qu’ingénieur en mécanique est d’avoir un impact positif sur la société par mes conceptions. Ayant déjà travaillé en étroite collaboration avec des kinésithérapeutes et des ergothérapeutes, je comprends l’importance d’impliquer les patients dans le processus de réadaptation. Plus précisément, j’aimerais continuer à développer des dispositifs technologiques innovants pour contribuer à l’amélioration de la qualité de vie des personnes handicapées.

Bien que mon expérience WISEST SRP ait eu lieu dans un domaine différent de celui que j’ai finalement décidé de suivre, j’espère que WISEST encouragera d’autres filles à explorer les domaines des STIM pour les années à venir.
