Coach Pathway

The Green & Gold Sport System's Coach Pathway offers progressive coach education opportunities for those interested in working with athletes at any level of sport, from grassroots to elite. Designed to operate in harmony with our Athlete Pathway, our Coach Pathway provides developing coaches with all the necessary competencies to facilitate our athletes' ongoing development. Coaches receive step-by-step training that makes it possible for them to help athletes Explore, Engage, and Excel in any one of 18 different sports.

Our Coach Pathway is organized around five distinct Green & Gold Coach Levels, with a distinct scope of practice existing for each. These levels also form the basis for our hiring decisions for all camps, programs, and teams within our system:

Our Coach Pathway is designed to enable developing coaches to fulfill the requirements of these levels in two distinct ways: through Academic Courses or Community Courses. Our Academic Courses include those associated with the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation's BKin and MCoach programs, and make it possible for University of Alberta students to develop their coaching competencies and to pursue their degree requirements at the same time. Our Community Courses are available to students and non-students, and include a wide range of offerings associated with the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).
