Academic Courses

As a part of the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta, the Green & Gold Sport System's Coach Pathway is closely connected to the BKin degree in Sport Coaching and the MCoach degree, and the various courses associated with them. When combined an appropriate amount of verified coaching experience, certain combinations of these courses make it possible for coaching students to fulfill the requirements of all Green & Gold Coach Levels.

These coach levels ensure that coaches have the necessary competencies to work with athletes at different points on our Athlete Pathway. They also form the basis of the Green & Gold Sport System's hiring practices. The following table summarizes the academic course and experience requirements associated with each of our Green & Gold Coach Levels:

Participation 2 100 level PAC in sport of interest* 125 hours
Performance 1 KIN 245 and 300 level PAC in sport of interest** 250 hours
Performance 2 BKin Degree (Sport Coaching) or MCoach Student 500 hours
Performance 3 MCoach Degree 750 hours (including 250 with University Athletics)
*Equivalency: Student-Athletes who are competing in their sport of interest
**Equivalency: Student-Athletes who have used 2 years of eligibility in their sport of interest
