Visiting Scholars
SLIS is part of the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, and offers the only Master of Library and Information Studies program on the Canadian prairies that is accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). With a vibrant and diverse staff, faculty, and student body, we welcome international visiting scholars to advance and diversify the work being done at SLIS as resources, process, and timing permits.
SLIS does not have the funds to support travel to and from University of Alberta, or to support scholars' living expenses. Visitors receive no compensation and are not eligible for employee benefits or financial aid. Every scholar must demonstrate sufficient financial support during their time in Canada. This is a requirement for visas. Scholars are also responsible for obtaining their own housing.
To apply for a visiting scholar position at SLIS you must find an interested member of the SLIS faculty whose research interests are compatible with your own to sponsor your visit. Contact the faculty member and the SLIS Chair. If there is potential, expect to be asked to then share:
- an application letter describing intent of plans for the visit, including research plan, funding sources, evidence of English proficiency and the dates for the visit.
- documentation of current employment preferably in the form of an official letter or ID issued by your organization.
