Courses

The School of Library and Information Studies offers a diverse selection of courses for graduate and undergraduate students. With the exception of core courses, practicum, and capping exercise, not all elective courses are offered every academic year. Some electives that require in-person instruction are not available to online students.

Students can meet all MLIS program course requirements with LIS courses taught in the School. However, MLIS students may take or import a small number of non-LIS courses taken from outside of the School and/or the University of Alberta.

Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) students are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of their registration and for the completion of the specified degree requirements. Students should consult with their Program Advisor and refer to the University Calendar for guidance in course selection. Program sheets can be used to track your progress through the MLIS program, and are available in Resources + Forms

LIS Courses

Library and Information Studies (LIS) courses are reserved for MLIS students and are comprised of core/required courses and elective courses.

External Courses

Students have the option of taking a small number of graduate courses from other departments that can be applied to the MLIS program requirements. These can be from other graduate departments at the University of Alberta, or from another postsecondary institution.

Courses Taken Outside of the University of Alberta

Students must complete the Requests for Course Approval form before they may take a course from another postsecondary institution for credit towards their U of A MLIS program.

Form submissions and all questions should be sent to slis@ualberta.ca.

*New* Upcoming Courses
