Student life at the University of Alberta is supported by Student Group Services (SGS) which provides programming and administrative assistance to student-run clubs and organizations on campus. This includes Student Group Recognition on behalf of the Dean of Students, Students' Union, and Graduate Students' Association.

Canadian Association of Professional Academic Librarians (CAPAL)

The CAPAL student chapter provides both on-campus and online MLIS students with opportunities to enhance their professional skills, and engage in discussions with academic librarians and peers through online events.


Forum for Information Professionals (FIP)

An annual one-day event of presentations and discussions on current topics facing librarianship, which is hosted by SLIS students and organized by the Forum for Information Professionals committee. FIP is now a recognized university student group under SGS.


Future Librarians for Intellectual Freedom (FLIF)

FLIF aims to promote awareness of intellectual freedom and social responsibility issues for professionals and the public, with a focus on library-related issues. FLIF is now a recognized university student group under SGS.


Graduate Students' Association (GSA)

The GSA is the representative body for all graduate students at the University of Alberta. All graduate students at the U of A are automatically members of the GSA.


Library and Information Studies Students' Association (LISSA)

LISSA represents all students enrolled in the MLIS program at SLIS. LISSA acts as a liaison between students and faculty and facilitates student participation in a variety of academic, professional, and extracurricular activities.
