As of May 1st, 2024 there are new Tri-Agency and Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) research security requirements in place that could impact your research funding application. Check out the Safeguarding Research Office (SRO) webpage for more information or you can talk to someone on our team at safegrd@ualberta.ca to find out what these requirements could mean for you.

Who Can Apply
Individual researchers or groups of researchers conducting research projects within the health sciences.
Value
Varies depending on the research field, approach, and scope of the project. In the last Project Grant competition, the average U of A award was $815,024.
Duration
Up to five years
Intake
Two competitions per year: Spring (early March) and Fall (mid-September). Each competition has two phases: registration and full application.

Deadlines: Spring 2025 competition
- January 31, 2025: Reach out to SRO to discuss applicable research security requirements.
- February 5, 2025: CIHR registration deadline
- February 14, 2025: Risk Assessment Form submission to SRO. If you have a private sector partner and require a Risk Assessment Form (RAF) under the National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships, your draft RAF needs to should be submitted to the SRO by this date to allow time for institutional review and approval.
- February 21, 2025 (4:30 pm Edmonton time): Deadline to submit in Researcher Home Page for RAS review.
- March 4, 2025 (10 am Edmonton time): Institutional deadline (last day to submit in ResearchNet).
- March 5, 2025: CIHR application deadline
