Researchers are offered a variety of sponsor-specific workshops throughout the year with an emphasis on external (Tri-Agency), New Frontiers Research Foundation, and provincial funding.

These workshops provide information on finding and applying for funding, including adjudication processes, guidelines, evaluation criteria, checklists, and best practices. They are presented by the sponsors and U of A professors with peer review committee experience. Workshops also cover international, private, public, and community-based research funding sources.
In addition, researchers can attend workshops specific to U of A research funding support. For personalized consultation and mentorship, researchers should contact their faculty-assigned Research Partner. Announcements for workshops will be posted on the Events Calendar and circulated by Research Partners.
Research Partnership Info and Panel Discussion - February 22, 2024
A panel of established researchers with a track record of successful research
partnerships will share their approach to partnered research. This session
will also review the Research Security considerations of Partnered Research
and provide information on how to establish industry research partnerships.

Partnership Grant - Stage 1
In this virtual one-hour overview workshop, we will help you determine the most important points to emphasize in the key mandatory sections of a SSHRC PG Stage 1 application. If you have already started working on developing a SSHRC PG, or want to apply for the PG in 2026, then this information session will be helpful for you.

Partnership Engage Grant
To assist researchers to plan their application far in advance of the SSHRC deadline, this virtual recurring one-hour workshop will cover key mandatory sections of a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant (PEG) application and RSO submission process. In this workshop, we will provide advice and tips for developing an effective PEG application. Most of the time will be devoted to specific content for each section and examples of dos and don’ts.

NSERC Alliance Grant Drop-In Sessions - Multiple Dates
Alliance Grant Drop-In Sessions for researchers who are either thinking about applying for, or are currently in the process of applying for an Alliance grant. During the session, we will discuss aspects of the Alliance grant program: for example, program guidelines, institutional requirements, budgetary considerations, EDI, funding structure, partner(s) eligibility, project setup or other topics of attendee interest. NSERC and the Research Partners will share their knowledge on all aspects of the NSERC Alliance Grants program.

NSERC Research Partnerships and the NSERC ECR Voucher - January 22, 2024
This workshop is geared to Early Career Researchers working in Natural Science or Engineering who want to start working with industry or community partners to support their research initiatives. Invitations will be sent to ECR's eligible to apply for the NSERC Alliance Vouchers program.

NSERC Alliance Research Partnership Programs - February 27, 2024
NSERC will be on Campus to discuss their Alliance Research Partnerships programs. Learn how the Alliance grants support research in natural sciences and engineering through collaborations to generate new knowledge and apply results for the benefit of Canadians.
The program has 4 main objectives:
- Advantage: Alliance Advantage grants are for partner-driven projects. They fund projects focused on the partners’ goals, with at least one partner sharing in the costs of research.
- Society: Alliance Society grants fund projects with societal impact as the main driver. They draw on the relevant perspectives and skill sets of active participants that help accelerate the translation and application of research results.
- International: Alliance international helps researchers establish and grow research collaborations that have a high potential for impact in NSE disciplines.
- Special calls and joint funding opportunities: Enables researchers to align their efforts with those of unique partners in specific areas and technologies. This information session will focus on the Advantage and Society grant programs.

Mitacs Accelerate Info Session

Hosted by the Research Partners, Mitacs representatives will discuss the Mitacs Accelerate program and how it can help you build partnerships while supporting your students or postdocs through research internships.

Mitacs Elevate Post Doctoral Fellowships Info Session
Open to any academic discipline, the Mitacs Elevate Fellowship provides a one- or two-year fellowship valued at $60,000 per year. Hosted by the Research Partners, Mitacs will provide information on what is available under this program and how to apply for this prestigious peer-reviewed fellowship.

Mitacs Indigenous Pathways Program Info Session - January 10, 2024
The Research Partner Network is hosting Mitcs, who will discuss the unique support they provide through their Indigenous Pathways program. This initiative provides additional funding for internship opportunities with Indigenous-owned organizations or Indigenous interns over and above the regular Mitacs programs.

The 2024 GRI program is now open. This program provides opportunities for international undergraduates from specific countries to participate in a 12-week internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members. Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneur Info Session - April 10, 2024
The Research Partner Network is hosting Mitcs, who will discuss the Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneur program. This funds student and postdoctoral entrepreneurs to build their professional entrepreneurial skills, with the goal of commercializing their start-up’s technology, product, or service through funded internships.
