About the Department
The Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Alberta is a leading academic centre for the advancement and development of the disciplines of medical imaging and image guided intervention and therapy.
The department is committed to imaging research and postgraduate medical education.
Education
The Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging has three residency programs in medical education accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada:
- Diagnostic Radiology
- Nuclear Medicine
- Pediatric Radiology
Diagnostic Radiology is a five year program. Nuclear Medicine is a seven year combined program that incorporates all the requirements for certification in both diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine.
The department provides fellowship training in five sub-specialized fields to physicians wishing to further their education after completing their residencies:
- Body Imaging
- Cardiothoracic Imaging
- Interventional Imaging
- Musculoskeletal Imaging
- Pediatric Imaging
As well, we offer a broad clinical experience to medical students and residents from other programs during elective rotations.
Research
Physicians and scientists in the department are involved in interdisciplinary research with colleagues throughout the faculty.

Our graduate student program includes opportunities for research in basic imaging sciences and clinical imaging for all levels of student and academic staff.
Health Services
The radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians in the department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging provide clinical and therapeutic imaging services to patients in the Edmonton region, Northern Alberta, Western Canada, Yukon, the Northwest and Nunavut territories.
These clinical services span the entire spectrum of radiology from interventional therapy and imaging support for highly specialized quaternary-referral programs, to community clinics providing primary care.
