This year we have some exciting and important changes to our BA and BSc Minor, Major, and Honors Programs in Psychology. Changes to our program requirements apply to students entering our programs in Fall 2024 and after. These changes offer more flexibility to students and alignment between our BA and BSc Programs. Along with these changes to our programs, we are offering some new courses.
Minor and Major Programs
Starting in Fall 2024 there are important changes to our Minor and Major Programs for students entering these programs in Fall 2024 and after. These changes include increases in the minimum credits for the BA Minor and BA Honors in Psychology and new course requirements for all BA and BSc programs.
- Minor Program: Completing a BA or BSc Minor in Psychology requires a minimum of 30 units in PSYCH courses. The BA Minor program now requires two additional PSYCH courses at the 200-level or higher to match the BSc Minor program requirements.
- Major Program: Completing a BA or BSc Major in Psychology requires a minimum of 42 units in PSYCH courses. The BA Major program now requires two additional PSYCH courses at the 300-level or higher to match the BSc Major program requirements.
- New Course Requirements: PSYCH 212 (Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology) and our new course PSYCH 213 (Introduction to Data Analysis I) are now required for all Minor and Major programs. These courses should be completed within the first 60 units of the degree. The PSYCH 213 requirement may be met by completing STAT 151 or STAT 161.
Honors Program
Starting in Fall 2024 there are important changes to our Honors Program for students entering in this program in Fall 2024 and after. These changes include new course requirements for both BA and BSc Honors programs.
- Program Requirements: Completing a BA or BSc Honors in Psychology requires a minimum of 72 units in PSYCH courses.
- New Course Requirements: We have introduced two new data analysis courses: PSYCH 213 and PSYCH 313. These courses should be completed within the first 60 units of the degree. The PSYCH 213 requirement may be met by completing STAT 151 or STAT 161. The PSYCH 313 requirement may be met by completing STAT 252.
- Graduation Requirements: The promotion and graduation requirements for the BA Honors in Psychology were changed to match those of the BSc Honors in Psychology.
- Honors Advisor: Starting in Fall 2024, Dr. Sandra Ziolkowski will be the new Honors Advisor for students completing the BA or BSc Honors in Psychology.
New Courses
Starting in Fall 2024, we we are offering two new data analysis courses that are part of our program changes and are designed to improve student training in research methods and data analysis.
- Our new PSYCH 213 (Introduction to Data Analysis in Psychology I) will be required for students in our Minor, Major or Honors Program. This requirement may be met by completing STAT 151 or STAT 161.
- Our new PSYCH 313 (Introduction to Data Analysis in Psychology II) will be required for students in our Honors Program. This requirement may be met by completing STAT 252. This course was previously offered as PSYCH 302 and 305 (Topic: Data Analysis in Behavioural Research).
We are also offering two additional new courses, one in Arts and one in Science:
- PSYCH 310 (Foundations in Professional Competencies) supports students in planning for the transition into the workforce. This course was previously offered as PSYCH 305 (Special Topics in Psychology I).
- PSYCH 425 (Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience) introduces students to developmental cognitive neuroscience methods and application to development. This course was previously offered as PSYCH 421 (Advanced Topics in Human Development).
