Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day

20 August 2024

Dear students and colleagues,

On August 23rd, we commemorate Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day. This occasion commemorates the historical signing of Treaty No. 6 between the Nêhiyaw (Wood Cree, Plains Cree), Nakota Isga (Nakota Sioux), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux), Dené peoples, and the Crown on August 23rd, 1876.

Treaty No. 6 encompasses the central regions of present-day Alberta and Saskatchewan, including Amiskwaci-wâskahikan (colonially known as Edmonton) within its boundaries. On this day, we reflect upon the remarkable achievements and invaluable contributions local First Nations communities have woven into the fabric of this region’s growth since the signing of the Treaty. Recognizing these accomplishments becomes an essential step on the path of reconciliation.
