Faculty Tenure Track Promotions
Pediatrics Academic Promotions Committee
The department provides a variety of support to faculty who are applying for promotion, including promotion readiness review and mentoring by the Academic Promotions Committee. The Academic Promotions Committee reviews third year packages and promotion packages before final submission. Faculty members undergoing third year review or going forward for promotion will receive feedback regarding their provided documentation. Probation period and third year review
A newly appointed faculty member will normally be given a probationary appointment as an assistant professor for a maximum of two successive probation periods. The first probation period is four years from the date of employment and the second probation period is after an additional two years, for a total six year probation period.
Assistant Professors will be asked to provide a promotions application package during their third year of employment to the department Academic Promotions Committee - this is known as the third year review package. The Academic Promotions Committee will review the third year promotions application package and provide direct feedback and mentoring to each faculty member, in order to ensure their successful promotion to associate professor.
Tenure and promotion to Associate Professor
Assistant professors can apply for tenure and promotion to associate professor after the conclusion of their first probationary period of four years. Normally, tenure and promotion are considered in the final 12 months of the second probationary period.
Faculty members going forward for promotion will be evaluated according to their job description and the criteria outlined in the Faculty Agreement and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry Guidelines for the Evaluation of Academic Staff.
The Academic Promotions Committee will review each faculty member's promotions application package and make a recommendation to the department chair regarding submission of the promotions application package to the Faculty Evaluation Committee (FEC). The department chair will make the final recommendation to the dean on whether the submission moves forward to the FEC.
The FEC consists of the dean, all department chairs, and at least two tenured faculty members. The decision regarding tenure and promotion to associate professor is made by the FEC.
Faculty applying for tenure may use either the FEC Guidelines 2006 or the FEC Standards 2017.
Promotion to Professor
Promotion to professor is a significant, but not automatic nor mandatory, step in an academic career. A long-term career as an associate professor is an acceptable and appropriate career path for many academics.
Promotion to professor represents recognition of special merit. Normally, candidates for professor have achieved national or international recognition as a leader in their chosen area of expertise as a teacher, researcher, scholar, administrator or scholarly clinician. Faculty members going forward for promotion will be evaluated according to their job description and the criteria outlined in the Faculty Agreement and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry Guidelines for the Evaluation of Academic Staff.
The Pediatrics Academic Promotions Committee will review each faculty member's promotions application package. The faculty member can apply for promotion directly to the Faculty Evaluation Committee (FEC).
The decision regarding promotion to professor is made by the FEC.
Faculty applying for promotion must use the FEC Standards 2017.
