Pediatric Undergraduate Medical Education
Medical students completing their degree in medicine at the University of Alberta are undergraduates of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. These students fall under the site and direction of the faculty's Office of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME). The UME in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry oversees the four-year program leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD).
UME outlines the program level objectives of the MD program.
Medical students completing their degree in medicine at the University of Alberta are required to do an eight week rotation in Pediatrics in their third year (PAED 546).
Pediatric Undergraduate Medical Education schedules year 3 students into various clinical experiences during their rotation in Pediatrics.
During these eight weeks students gain exposure to patients on one of the Clinical Teaching Units (CTU) at The Stollery Children's Hospital, on call shifts on CTU as well as within the Pediatric Emergency Department. Four weeks of the rotation is spent within an ambulatory setting where they will see patients for well checkups, new consults, and acute problems; during these weeks students spend time with a neonatologist for exposure to newborns and various pediatric subspecialty clinics.
