Dermatology

Welcome to the Division of Pediatric Dermatology at the Stollery Children's Hospital, a tertiary referral center located in the heart of Alberta, made possible through a strong partnership between the Department of Pediatrics, the Division of Dermatology, and Alberta Health Services.

About the Division

Our division primarily operates as an outpatient service, conducting clinics within the Pediatric Outpatient Department (currently located at the Aberhart Centre). Inpatient and emergency consultations are available as needed. Additionally, we extend our dermatologic expertise to children across Northern and Central Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, and the Northeast regions of British Columbia.

By utilizing Telehealth, we seamlessly connect healthcare providers and patients across different locations, eliminating the need for travel.

Our goal is to offer consultations for pediatric dermatological issues coordinating care with your healthcare or allied health provider, particularly when previous treatments have not been effective or when further investigations are necessary for proper diagnosis, treatment, and management.

Our scope of clinical work is focused on a wide spectrum of skin conditions* (and not limited to), from common issues like atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, warts, molluscum contagiosum, and complicated acne, to rare skin diseases such as epidermolysis bullosa, dermatomyositis, cutaneous lupus erythematosus, morphea, ichthyosis, and well as hereditary skin diseases. We offer laser treatments for birthmarks when appropriate and perform minor surgical procedures as required.

As a teaching division, our staff welcomes numerous trainees, including those from pediatrics, dermatology, and family practice, along with medical students in their third and fourth years of training, ensuring a rich learning environment and comprehensive care for our patients. We are a center committed to continuing medical education events (CME).

As members of the Women and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI), and in coordination with the Pediatric Clinical Investigation Unit (PCIU), our division actively participates in numerous clinical research projects, with a specific focus on advancing knowledge in pediatric aspects of skin disorders and exploring new treatments for both common and rare skin conditions.
