Honors in MLCS

The BA Honors Program in Modern Languages and Cultural Studies is a degree of specialization. It offers exceptional students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of their area of major study and to make this knowledge their own through the completion of a faculty-guided Honors Essay in their final year.

A major with honors in Modern Languages and Cultural Studies requires a minimum of *54 to a maximum of *60 at the senior level.

General Requirements (9 credits):

Courses selected must include:

MLCS 210 (*3): Approaches to Cultural Studies

Introduction to the major issues within the discipline of Cultural Studies from an international perspective, and provision of the necessary terminology and theoretical tools for examining general topics and case studies with emphasis on the question of languages.

MLCS 410 (*3): Capstone

In this practice-based course that addresses an urgent concern facing the world today students will synthesize and apply the knowledge and skills obtained in the Modern Languages and Cultural Studies Major. This course is offered only in Winter terms. 

MLCS 495 (*3) Thesis

In addition to the *9 general requirements, students in the honors program take the following additional credits at the senior level including:

*6 credits at the senior level in any area of the Department of Modern Languages & Cultural Studies (or in relevant courses outside the department, at the discretion of the honors advisor)
*3 credits in courses with an MLCS-prefix at the senior level.

Courses with experiential learning components

*36 credits allocated according to one of two routes:

Language Studies route - MLCS BA

Language Studies route:

*36 credits at the senior level in one language OR split between two languages taught in the Department of MLCS.

If credits are split between two languages, at least *12 must be earned in each language.

*6 of the *36 credits taken must be at the 400-level.

At least *6 of the credits earned in this route must be earned in an experience abroad or in Francophone areas of Canada OR in courses that include significant experiential learning components related to the language(s) studied.

Cross-Cultural Studies route - MLCS BA

Cross-Cultural Studies route:

*6 credits at the senior level in one language taught in the Department of MLCS.

*12 credits at the senior level in the same language taught in the Department of MLCS OR *12 at the senior level in an additional language taught in the Department of MLCS OR *12 at the senior level in courses with the same prefix within the Department of MLCS taught in English.

*18 credits in courses with the same prefix within the Department of Modern Languages & Cultural Studies taught in English

*6 of the *36 credits taken in this route must be at the 400-level (excluding MLCS 410 and 495).

At least *6 of the credits in this route must be earned in courses that include significant experiential learning components appropriate to the area of study OR in an experience abroad or in Francophone areas of Canada.

Combined Honors in MLCS

Student can combine an honors degree in MLCS with another honors degree from outside the department by fulfilling the honors requirements for Combined Honors set out in both departments.

A major with combined honors in Modern Languages and Cultural Studies requires a minimum of *36 to a maximum of *48 at the senior level.

General Requirements (9 credits):

Courses selected must include:

MLCS 210 (*3): Approaches to Cultural Studies

Introduction to the major issues within the discipline of Cultural Studies from an international perspective, and provision of the necessary terminology and theoretical tools for examining general topics and case studies with emphasis on the question of languages.

MLCS 410 (*3): Capstone course

In this practice-based course that addresses an urgent concern facing the world today students will synthesize and apply the knowledge and skills obtained in the Modern Languages and Cultural Studies Major. This course is offered only in Winter terms. 

INT D 520 (*6): Thesis course 

For students in Combined Honors programs. Permission of both Departments and the Faculty of Arts, Undergraduate Services office is required. Registration in this class may require attendance and participation in specific program seminars. Students must apply to the Faculty office by August 1st to be considered for registration in this course. [Faculty of Arts, Undergraduate Student Services]

In addition to the general requirements, students in the combined honors program take the following additional credits at the senior level including:

*3 credits in courses with an MLCS-prefix at the senior level:

*24 credits allocated according to one of two routes:

Language Studies route - MLCS BA

Language Studies route:

*24 credits at the senior level in one language OR split between two languages taught in the Department of MLCS. If credits are split between two languages, at least *6 at the senior level must be earned in each language.

*6 credits of the *24 taken must be at the 400-level.

At least *6 of the credits earned in this route must be earned in an experience abroad or in Francophone areas of Canada OR in courses that include significant experiential learning components related to the language(s) studied.

Cross-Cultural Studies - MLCS BA

Cross-Cultural Studies route:

*6 credits at the senior level in one language taught in the Department of MLCS.

*6 credits at the senior level in the same language taught in the Department of MLCS
OR *6 at the senior level in an additional language taught in the Department of MLCS
OR *6 at the senior level in courses with the same prefix within the Department of MLCS taught in English.

*12 credits in courses with the same prefix within the Department of MLCS taught in English.

*6 credits of the *24 taken in this route must be at the 400-level (excluding MLCS 410 and 495).

At least *6 credits in this route must be earned in courses that include significant experiential learning components appropriate to the area of study OR in an experience abroad or in Francophone areas of Canada.

It will send you to the Application for Admission - you fill out the application ($75 fee for internal to the U of A applications)

Follow the links (e.g. for Canadian or International - and then if you are a current U of A student you would select the "I'm currently attending the University of Alberta" link) and you start the application from there.
