Alberta Institute, Wenzhou Medical University

The Alberta Institute, Wenzhou Medical University is the result of an international higher-education collaboration between the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) and Wenzhou Medical University in Wenzhou, China. Established in 2020, this joint institute became China’s first cooperative education institution specializing in medicine.

Through this institute, both universities aim to lead a shared vision of better global health into tangible outcomes, and integrate efforts to drive innovation in research, medical education and clinical practice.

The Alberta Institute, Wenzhou Medical University creates collaborative initiatives to meet our common goals:

  • to train qualified health professionals to serve the health care of people in Wenzhou and China, through special programs for medical students and physician training opportunities that include observation, shadowing and leadership training related to management of departments and divisions, as well as physician-patient relationship models;
  • to establish a national regional medical centre and national key clinical specialty; and
  • to build a high-quality international education platform for world-class medical education in Wenzhou.

About Wenzhou Medical University

Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) is a Priority Development University in Zhejiang Province, China. WMU offers 27 undergraduate programs in four major disciplines of medicine, science, engineering and management.

The school has successfully entered three prominent world university rankings, including the Academic Ranking of World University Rankings by Shanghai Science and Technology, US News World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Seven disciplines have entered the top one per cent of the ESI global rankings, including clinical medicine.
