Learn about Advanced Life Support Training and Remote Mandatory Training, including the reimbursement processes.

Advanced Life Support Training

The PGME office does not mandate any advanced life support training for residents. We rely on programs to identify the minimum requirement needed for their residents based on many variables, including site and unit requirements. Residents should confirm requirements with their home residency program for the most accurate, up to date information.

Per the Resident Physician Agreement, Article 34.02 (Advanced Resuscitation Courses), residents shall be reimbursed by AHS for 100% of the tuition and registration fees.

Submitting a Reimbursement Claim to AHS

You will be required to take the iExpense training before you can submit a claim electronically. To register for a training session log into the MyLearningLink portal using your AHS network username and password.

Once you have completed the training you may log into iExpense using your Oracle user ID and password (please note that this is different from your AHS network account and can only be obtained after completing the mandatory training). You can find detailed steps in the How to Submit Claims Document.

Monitoring your AHS email is crucial to the iExpense process. Relevant communications including payment confirmation and claim denials will not be directed to external email accounts (ex. U of A email).

For questions regarding the reimbursement process, please contact AHS Academic Medicine - Medical Affairs at EDM.AcademicMedicine@ahs.ca or 780-735-0712.

Remote Mandatory Training

Remote Mandatory Training is where a resident physician provides services and relocates as part of their mandatory training requirements at a location in a community in Canada that is at least fifty (50) kilometres (km) away from the city limits of the community where they normally perform the majority of their duties.

Mandatory training experiences (rotations, courses) are typically put into place due to the program not having the training experience accessible to them in the home site location, or due to the program not having sufficient resources to provide the training experience to all learners within the required PGY level and/or stage of training.

Per the Resident Physician Agreement, Article 34.01 (Remote Mandatory Training), residents shall be reimbursed by AHS for accommodation and travel expenses for costs associated with remote training. Please see the agreement for specific amounts and eligibility. Please note that sponsored trainees are not eligible for reimbursement.

The PGME Office and AHS Academic Medicine work together to review and approve all remote mandatory rotations eligible for reimbursement.

Submitting a Reimbursement Claim to AHS

Residents who complete mandatory rotations are entitled to financial reimbursement.

When completing the form, it is imperative to follow the instructions for claiming mandatory rotations. Please note that improperly completed forms may result in delayed reimbursement.

Reimbursements can take up to eight weeks to process. They will appear via direct deposit on your pay advice or by cheque to the address filed in e-People. Please ensure that your banking information and personal contact information are up to date at all times.

For questions regarding the reimbursement process, please contact AHS Academic Medicine - Medical Affairs at EDM.AcademicMedicine@ahs.ca or 780-735-0712.
