PGME Awards, Bursaries, and Scholarships

The funding opportunities listed below are awarded annually to qualified resident physicians enrolled in an accredited postgraduate residency training program with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. 

Nomination Process

Calls for Nominations
Calls for nominations are distributed directly to Program Directors, Program Administrators, and to Residents (via the PGME Resident Digest newsletter) at the beginning of the calendar year, with regular reminders.

Recommendations for nominations from general faculty, administrators, or other residents should be brought forward for consideration to the relevant Program Director (PD) and Residency Program Committee (RPC), as nominations must be submitted by the PD and RPC.

Nomination Package
A nomination package must include:

  • A letter of support that clearly identifies the achievements of the candidate as they align with the criteria, submitted by the Program Director (on behalf of the RPC)
  • The candidate's name, program, and postgraduate year (PGY)

Submission of Nominations
Nominations should be forwarded to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education at pgtmld@ualberta.ca, by the Program Director of the nominee prior to April 10 of the applicable year.

Selection Process

Annually, the Associate Dean, PGME will strike an Awards Committee to select the award recipients. The Awards Committee will consider and score nominations on the basis of documentation provided by the nominator addressing the nominee’s achievements in relation to the individual award criteria/conditions. 

Alberta Jenkinson and Stephen Buhl Award

Endowed through the estate of Alberta Jenkinson in memory of Alberta Jenkinson and Stephen Buhl.

CONDITIONS
This is annually awarded to resident physicians enrolled with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Recipients will be selected on the basis of qualities of leadership and collegiality and contributions made to the well-being of other residents. Recipients must be seen as role models on the basis of their ability to contribute towards a pleasant and productive learning environment for other residents.

Dr Lorne Baird Warneke LGBTQS+ Resident Award

Field of Study: Postgraduate Medicine
Number: 1

CONDITIONS
To be awarded annually to a resident physician with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in any year of study with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated leadership, advocacy, and/or scholarly work advancing equity and inclusion for the LGBTQS+ population. Preference will be given to resident physicians with demonstrated focus in transgender populations.

Dr and Mrs. Pak-Sek Cheung Bursary

Endowed by friends and family in memory of Dr and Mrs. Pak-Sek Chung.

Field of Study: Chinese Herbal Medicine
Number: 1

CONDITIONS
To be awarded annually to a student with satisfactory academic standing who is conducting research which relates to Chinese Traditional Medicine in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program at the University of Alberta. This bursary is open to students enrolled in full- or part-time studies who are continuing their studies in Chinese Traditional Medicine. The recipient will be chosen on the basis of financial need.

Gordon Denchfield Thompson Scholarship

Endowed by the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.

CONDITIONS
To be awarded annually to a resident physician with superior academic achievement who is enrolled with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing and a personal commitment to community service.

Postgraduate Education Award for Resident Leadership and Advocacy

Endowed by Dr Ramona Kearney.

CONDITIONS
To be awarded annually to a resident physician with satisfactory standing enrolled with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated leadership, advocacy and/or scholarly work advancing antiracism, equity and inclusion for underrepresented groups in Medicine. Preference given to a resident who identifies as a Visible Minority.

Wâpanachakos Indigenous Health Program (WIHP) Funding Opportunities

The Wâpanachakos Indigenous Health Program was founded in 1988 by the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta to encourage a greater number of First Nations, Inuit and Metis students gain access to, and graduate from, all faculty of medicine and dentistry programs.

Dr Marnie Hinton Award

To be awarded to a resident physician with satisfactory academic standing in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta who has demonstrated an interest in physician health through a project or initiative. Residents are welcome to apply for the award; please contact the Office of Advocacy & Wellbeing (OAW).
