Workplace Injury

As you participate in the clinical learning environment, anatomy labs, and other learning experiences, there is a risk for potential injury or exposure to blood and bodily fluid or non-blood borne infection from patients or lab specimens. If any such injury or accidental exposure occurs, please follow the protocol outlined below.

All injuries or incidents that occur in the learning environment must be reported to the MD Program within 48 hours.

Responding to an Injury or Exposure

  1. Remove contaminated gloves, clothes, etc.
  2. For a sharps injury, allow bleeding for 1-2 minutes - do not squeeze. Wash the area with soap and water or alcohol based hand rub and cover with a dressing.
  3. For mucous membrane exposure (i.e. eyes, nose, mouth) and non-intact skin, flush with large amounts of water for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Report the incident to the Charge Nurse and your supervisor immediately to complete Source Risk Assessment and obtain first aid.

University Health Centre

As a member of the University of Alberta community, you can access healthcare services through the University Health Centre (UHC) located on campus in the Students’ Union Building (SUB). The UHC is open to all staff members, students, and family of students (spouses and children).

New patients to UHC can walk in to see any available physician. Existing patients can call to book an in-person appointment at (780) 492-2612 or book through Medeo online booking . All patients can walk into the clinic to see a physician during office hours. You will be asked to show proof of your health care coverage and your ONECard or photo ID at every visit to the University Health Centre.
