A Safe Environment
- The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) understands and recognizes that the medical school environment can be a hostile and unsafe space for generally excluded and underrepresented populations including Indigenous peoples. In 2018, the faculty launched the Health Promoting Learning Environments (HPLE) working group whose task is to improve the health, safety, and well-being of all students by making system-level changes to policies, processes and procedures that may impede student safety within the learning environment.
Since 2018, representatives from across the faculty have engaged in a strategic planning process to address barriers to the realization of a healthy and safe learning environment for all learners, with a focus on better meeting the needs of Indigenous students. - The Indigenous Admissions Action Plan Subcommittee (IAAPS) action plan identifies ways to make meaningful and system-level changes to the FoMD, to increase the level of safety and security of Indigenous learners, staff, and faculty.
