Joint Commitment to Action on Indigenous Health

In May 2019, the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) released the Joint Commitment to Action on Indigenous Health. This report outlines concrete actions for institutional change that will enable Canadian medical schools to respond to the TRC Calls to Action and fulfill their social accountability mandates with respect to Indigenous health.

The AFMC report includes 10 actions to build meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, increasing the number of Indigenous physicians and developing an Indigenous health curriculum, as well as policies of cultural safety and anti-racism.

All 17 Canadian medical schools endorsed this commitment unanimously and agreed to work on its implementation. The University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is dedicated to honouring the mandate to serve all communities with respect and understanding of their needs.
