High School Students (Y1Q1)
This information is ONLY for students entering the BSc Engineering program directly from high school or with less than 9 units of transfer credit.
Registration Steps
In order to register for your classes, you must complete the following steps:
Starting in March, students who have accepted their offer and paid their non-refundable tuition deposit will receive an email to their UAlberta and personal accounts regarding the Registration Pattern Ranking being added as a required formin Launchpad.
You must submit the Registration Pattern Ranking Form to be assigned a registration pattern and have access to course registration.
Rank the registration patterns in order of your preference. Your rankings and the additional information provided will be considered, but students will be assigned to their registration pattern according to availability. There is limited space available in each registration pattern and students may be placed anywhere from their first to their last choice. Failure to submit your registration pattern preferences in a timely manner will delay your registration access.
Review the Pattern Selection Overview by clicking the image below:
Once submitted, the Faculty of Engineering will notify you of your assigned registration pattern within 5 business days (not including weekends or statutory holidays). This will be an ongoing process until classes start in September. Once a registration pattern is assigned, it will not be changed.
*See Detailed Pattern Registration Documents below.
Students are responsible for registering themselves in all 12 courses for Fall and Winter terms in their assigned registration pattern. Please check Bear Tracks for your enrollment date under Manage Classes > My Enrollment Date or in My Schedule Builder > Enrollment Appointment Date.
Failure to register in your assigned registration pattern courses in a timely manner may result in limited course options to choose from.
Registration Patterns:
Click on the images below to view information specific to each registration pattern.
Important Notes:
- Please register in Fall classes first, then Winter classes, due to pre/corequisite requirements. Searching for classes in My Schedule Builder:
- You can search by course (ex: ‘CHEM 103’) to see all of the sections of that course in a term.
- We recommend that you search using the 5-digit class number that is provided in the registration pattern document to find the specific classes available in your pattern.
- CHEM and PHYS/EN PH labs are taught on alternating weeks
- In order to ensure these labs are scheduled on alternating weeks, register in both EVEN or both ODD lab sections for both of these courses. (For example, you can enroll in CHEM Lab T01 and PHYS/EN PH Lab EF21, both ODD sections.)
- Please note that in My Schedule Builder, you will not see the alternating labs for CHEM/PHYS in the first week of classes. You will need to toggle through the next weeks of your term to view the alternating labs in your schedule.
- If you register in both labs on the same day and time, this will not create a conflict even if it appears that way in Bear Tracks compared to My Schedule Builder. In Bear Tracks, please review the text below your schedule for the specific dates and times of each lab.
- You must register in the classes specified in the Engineering Registration Pattern you have been assigned.
- If a section of a course listed in your pattern is full, you may put the class on your Watch List. Make sure to register in a different section of the course while you wait to see if that section opens at a later time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Once we have received your registration pattern ranking form, you will receive an email notifying you of your registration pattern assignment within 3-4 business days - this does not include weekends or statutory holidays.
While we want you to be happy with your schedule, the following reasons do NOT warrant a pattern change:
- You do not like the hours of your classes.
- Your classes conflict with work or volunteer commitments.
- You would like to swap schedules with another student.
If you have a schedule/pattern change request that falls outside of these reasons, please contact us at engginfo@ualberta.ca.
When you fill out the Registration Pattern Ranking Form, please indicate any scheduling conflict concerns you may have such as varsity sports, etc.
Please indicate on the Registration Pattern Ranking Form that you applied to CSJ for French language instruction. A registration pattern will be assigned that allows you to register in both the courses that will be taught in French at CSJ and the courses that will be taught in English on North Campus.
If you choose to decline your offer to attend the Faculty of Engineering after having registered in your courses, you must drop your classes in Bear Tracks. To drop classes from your schedule, please follow these instructions. If you do not drop your classes prior to the Fall and Winter Add/Drop Deadlines, you will be assessed and charged tuition and fees for all of the classes in which you are registered.
No. You must register in the courses that match the Engineering Registration Pattern you have been assigned. If a section of a class listed in your pattern is full, you may put the course on your Watch List . Make sure to register in a different section of the course while you wait to see if that section opens at a later time.
Yes, some of the courses in your first year have prerequisite and/or corequisite requirements. It is important to register in your Fall term courses first and then your Winter term. Please see the following two examples.
- Example 1: MATH 100 is a corequisite to ENGG 130, therefore you must register in MATH 100 before ENGG 130.
- Example 2: EN PH 131 has prerequisites of MATH 100 and ENGG 130 and a corequisite of MATH 101, therefore you must register in Fall term before Winter term AND register in MATH 101 before EN PH 131 in the Winter term.
This message means that there are no longer seats in that section available for Y1Q1 students. Choose a different section of the course to register in. You cannot put this section on your Watch List but you can keep checking back to see if space opens for Y1Q1 students.
