Centre for Energy and Mineral Processing

The Centre for Energy and Mineral Processing (CEMP) is an industry-funded and led research centre at the University of Alberta. The Faculty of Engineering and Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering established the CEMP building on the endowment research funds donated by industry. The centre facilitates, supports and administers university research projects that are of interest to industry partners.

Canadian Centre for Welding and Joining

The Canadian Centre for Welding and Joining (CCWJ) is a $5M research facility centred on steel applications and product development, wear protective overlays, numerical modelling of welding, and laser-based advanced manufacturing. The centralized facilities at the University of Alberta include characterization facilities reaching atomic-resolution TEM.

Canadian Underground Infrastructure Innovation Centre (CUIIC)

​The Canadian Underground Infrastructure Innovation Centre (CUIIC) is a research and education centre focused on important issues of underground infrastructure. The
CUIIC focuses on providing stakeholders across all sectors with opportunities to collaborate on research and training opportunities in underground infrastructure to provide cost-effective, sustainable solutions to the challenges involved in building, assessing, and rehabilitating underground infrastructure.


CISC Centre for Steel Structures Education and Research

The CISC Centre for Steel Structures Education and Research is an industry-driven, student-centred education and research network dedicated to continually advancing the steel industry, engaging in interdisciplinary collaborative research, providing innovative education opportunities, and developing leaders of the future.


Construction Innovation Centre (CIC)

The CIC provides breakthrough research, education, and training that directly benefits Canada’s construction industry and leads to the sustainable and economic development of our built environment and a competitive advantage for the Canadian construction industry.


Imperial Oil Institute for Oil Sands Innovation

The Institute for Oil Sands Innovation (IOSI)  is built on the partnership between the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Engineering, Imperial Oil Resources Limited, and Alberta Innovates. Many projects in the Tailings theme are carried out in collaboration with Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) with Pathways Alliance. The institute's research projects are often leveraged by financial support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).


Water Research Centre

The Water Research Centre focuses on a wide range of global water challenges across various disciplines, including sociology, rural economy, and Indigenous communities. Researchers in the Faculty of Engineering  collaborate with colleagues in the U of A’s College of Natural and Applied Sciences as well as in the health and social sciences to provide integrated solutions to critical water-related problems.
