About the Dean
Professor Jason Carey, PhD, PEng, has been Dean of the Faculté Saint-Jean and Chief Executive Officer of Campus Saint-Jean, the University of Alberta's French-language campus, since 2022.
Previously, Jason Carey was Professor and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Engineering, as well as Vargo Teaching Chair. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Ottawa and, since joining the University of Alberta in 2004, has contributed to numerous faculty successes in program innovation, industry partnerships, and research-related developments. His research interests in engineering pedagogy, biomechanics, and advanced materials follow a multidisciplinary approach that allows Campus Saint-Jean to stand out in an increasingly competitive environment.
Professor Carey heads a university faculty that plays a vital role in French-language education in Canada, and is a pillar of Edmonton's vibrant francophone community. A native French speaker, he is fluent in both of Canada's official languages. As an alumnus of the bilingual Mechanical Engineering program and Academic Vice-President of the Graduate Student Association (GSAÉD) at the University of Ottawa, he is keenly aware of the importance of French-language education in a diverse community.
Through his extensive career in research, teaching, and academic leadership, Jason Carey understands the opportunities and challenges facing Campus Saint-Jean and the francophone community in Western Canada. As dean, he serves as a strong voice for Campus Saint-Jean and the U of A, as well as its student community, stakeholders, and community members.
The development of Alberta's French-speaking community is at the heart of Professor Carey's concerns. To this end, he has developed a comprehensive community outreach strategy, establishing numerous agreements with associations and organisations representing a wide cross-section of society. In this way, the diversity of the campus aligns with community unity, enabling the Campus to fulfil its role as a cornerstone of the Canadian Francophonie.
Professor Carey is first and foremost a husband and father, a great music lover, and an avid runner.
