Program Overview

What the The Washington Center (TWC) has to offer:

  • A custom internship experience - TWC matches you with an internship host that aligns with your career goals and interests
  • Career Development/Readiness programming
  • In-person and virtual, tailored to the interests of each student and for which students can receive up to 9 academic transfer credits
  • A wide selection of academic courses and lectures facilitated by national and international leaders are offered, as well as small group meetings on public policy issues, site visits, embassy visits, workshops and other activities.
  • The program, including internship options, is suitable for a wide range of majors encompassing the following interest areas: International Affairs; Politics and Public Policy; Media and Communications; Arts and Humanities; Legal Affairs; and Science, Technology and Society.
  • Government of Alberta will provide a scholarship to participants to help cover TWC fees and living costs in DC


When Can I Go?

Terms Offered: Fall, Summer, Winter

Duration: Students can participate in one of the following:

  • a 10 week Summer program (June to August)
  • a 15 week Fall program (September to December)
  • a 15 week Winter program (January to April)

Eligibility Requirements

 Applicants must:

  • Have completed 30 credits in their current program at time of application
  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Be an Alberta resident, as defined as:
    o a student who was born in Alberta
    o a student that has graduated from a high school in Alberta; or
    o a student that has lived in Alberta for 12 consecutive months
  • Currently be attending and registered in an approved doctoral, masters, bachelor or diploma program at an Alberta post-secondary institution
  • Have a GPA of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale

Fees + Costs

Due to a generous funding agreement with the Government of Alberta and the Washington Center, University of Alberta students will only be responsible for paying a fee of $2600 USD (the regular cost is $10,965 USD). This will cover both the program and accommodation costs.

Students are encouraged to apply for funding even if they do not have a confirmed internship to avoid missing important deadlines.  

General fees and costs


Housing

Students have the option to use TWC apartment-style residences in the NOMA district of Washington, D.C., near Union Station and Capitol Hill. Housing is conveniently located near public transportation and grocery stores.  The cost for this is covered in the program fee detailed above.
