Am I Eligible?
As a UAlberta student, you can participate in an Education Abroad program if you meet the eligibility requirements below.
Some institutions may also have their own set requirements, such as a higher GPA than the minimum indicated below. You'll find this information in the Program Finder.
Exchange and Summer Programs
You must:
- Be registered as a full-time UAlberta student
- Complete at least 12 credits by the application deadline
- Have not already reached the transfer credit limit (60 credits) for your UAlberta degree program. (If you have but you still hope to receive transfer credit to apply toward your UAlberta degree program while on exchange or at the summer program, please talk to your faculty to discuss any options that might be open to you.)
- Have an admission GPA of 2.5 calculated (at the application deadline) on all university-transferable coursework completed in the most recent two terms of study if they contain a minimum of 24 credits. If those two terms contain less than 24 credits, all work in the next most recent term(s) is included in the calculation until the minimum total of 24 credits is reached. For applicants who have attempted less than 24 credits of transferable post-secondary work, the admission GPA is based on all university or university transfer credits attempted to a minimum of 12 credits. The admission GPA requirement is also subject to the further faculty-specific eligibility requirements explained below:
- Business students must have completed at least two terms of graded Alberta School of Business (ASB) coursework and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in their two most-recently completed terms at ASB in order to be considered for participation in an exchange or summer program. Terms considered will be limited to the Fall and Winter terms.
- Law students require a cumulative and current GPA of 2.7
- Engineering students require a cumulative 3.3 GPA in the last four academic terms to go abroad (can apply after three terms)
Keep in mind that most courses offered during the summer are at the undergraduate level. Graduate students are still eligible to apply.
UAlberta alumni and staff are also eligible to apply for many of the Summer Abroad Programs

If those two terms contain less than 24 credits, all work in the next most recent term(s) is included in the calculation until the minimum total of 24 credits is reached. However, some internship programs have different requirements. This information will be outlined in the Program Finder.
