What is the CIL?
Hear from CIL Alumni
Why Enroll?
- Learn how to thrive in culturally diverse and global contexts
- Meet other internationally-minded students
- Stand out to employers and graduate schools
- You may already have completed many of the requirements, so...why not?
That's our pitch. But don't take it from us. Our graduates speak for themselves.
“ The CIL helped prepare me for the culturally rich and diverse classrooms in Alberta today: I was asked to jump outside my comfort zone and critically reflect upon my own lived experiences. The CIL opened the door to diverse learning opportunities, which I plan on using to better connect with my future students. For pre-service teachers seeking a practical way to learn more about the world in which we live and teach, choose CIL! ” - Livia Carels, Faculty of Education, June 2024
"As an international student, the Certificate in International Learning helped me weave the gaps between my own culture, Canadian culture, and cultures from all over the world. In my current role as a Student Service Advisor, I am equipped with the tools to connect and work with all kinds of students, Canadian or international!" - Timothy Hendrawan, Faculty of Science, June 2023
"The CIL challenges one's perception of the world; it truly opened my eyes to international possibilities. I can't recommend this program enough for those who are even slightly curious about the world or themselves." - Celine Caruso Dixon, Faculty of Arts, June 2023
"The CIL gave me the chance to learn both in and out of the classroom, question things, and dig deeper into my thoughts. I developed an international mindset which is extremely important in today's world." - Shenin Mehnaj, Faculty of ALES, June 2021
"My CIL experience allowed me to become more self-aware. It made my international experience more meaningful." - Mohamed Rahall, Faculty of Arts, June 2018
"It's a great opportunity to grow, learn and expand your worldview. I found it helpful to move from passive awareness to active participation in global society." - Astrid Arzu, Faculty of Law, June 2018
"It will challenge you, but it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your degree ..." - Erin Yue, Faculty of Science, June 2018
"CIL has not only taught me amazing things, but it has changed me tremendously (in a good way)" - Huilin Zhang, Faculty of Arts, June 2018
"I would highly recommend the program to anyone!" - Jennifer DeChant, Faculty of Business, June 2018

When should I enroll?
The sooner the better! With course-based Certificates, you apply for the Certificate after completing the required courses. The CIL is different. You need to attend sessions scheduled at specific points in the semester, so it is a good idea to enroll early.
You do not need to have completed any requirements to enroll. After enrolling, you will receive notifications about required sessions, deadlines, and exclusive CIL training opportunities.
As per the U of A calendar, students are "required to register for the certificate no later than September 30 of their third year, or at completion of 60 credits, if studying part-time."
See the full calendar description. For a suggested CIL timeline, please visit our Resources page.
You may be able to enroll later, especially if you are well on your way to completing the program requirements. Email us your questions at cil@ualberta.ca.
