Dr. Margaret Mackey is attending the TD National Reading Summit, a two-day meeting held in Montreal on January 20 and 21. This meeting is the second in a series of three; she also attended the first session in Toronto in late 2009. In the interim, Dr. Mackey has served as a member of a Summit working party on high school and post-secondary readers.
The aim of the Summit is to contribute to the development of a national set of policies and priorities, as well as accumulating back-up resources, on the subject of the promotion of reading; Canada is unusual among the industrialized countries in not having any policy in relation to promoting reading.
The Summit is attended by a wide range of interested professionals; the largest single group in attendance in Toronto consisted of public librarians.
