Out of the Stacks and Into the Community: The Library's Approach to Newcomers was a University of Alberta International Week 2011 session held on February 3. Angelica Tarnowski (Community Librarian, Millwoods Branch, Edmonton Public Library), Kristen Rumohr (Multicultural Youth Services Intern Librarian, Edmonton Public Library), and Dr. Toni Samek (SLIS) teamed up with Dr. Kathleen de la Pena McCook (Distinguished University Professor University of Southern Florida and immigration rights advocate). Angelica and Kristen shared their approaches to ensuring welcoming and relevant library collections, services, and programs for newcomers and members of the multicultural community, with special attention to newcomer youth. Toni delivered a talk about migration and library issues in the United States, written by Kathleen de la Pena McCook, and whose participation was in absentia. This middle part of the program included attention to the American Library Association's new 2011 Resolution in Support of Requesting Congress to Reintroduce and Vote on the Dream Act. The session closed with coverage of LIS 598 LIS Services to Special Populations, a course Toni developed for SLIS that debuted in fall 2010.
