The Greater Edmonton Library Association's Women's Prison Library and Reintegration Subcommittee and the Edmonton Public Library welcomed a diverse audience at the first screening of Books Behind Bars on March 31, 2011 in the Stanley A. Milner Library Theatre. Books Behind Bars is a short documentary film, shot by SLIS alumna Tanya Driechel, that showcases the growth of the Edmonton Institution for Women prison library, its innovative volunteer programs, and the people inside and outside the prison who make it all happen. As noted on the GELA Prison Project blog, the Subcommittee "has grown from a group of four
librarians to a group of over twenty active volunteers, who organize many projects, such as books clubs, book drives, and borrowing projects. Among these is the Storybook Project, where the volunteers record women reading to their children, and send the recordings, along with the books, to their children." The film was followed by a panel presentation in which numerous SLIS graduates and a former inmate who experienced the programs shared their perspectives and experiences. The panel members thanked the School for its educational support. For more information, see: http://gelaprison.wordpress.com/.
