System Updates
Please find below a log of updates to the online ethics system.
Effective February 2, 2019:
The online ethics system will be undergoing an upgrade, which will result in some changes for researchers mostly related to a renewed look and feel throughout the application (fonts, tabs, images, borders, etc.). These changes will not affect how the system works and will provide a more modern aesthetic for the system.

Between the upgrade on February 2, 2019 and the end of the year, researchers, staff and students will see the following changes.
1) Human Module: Reportable Events: A new and simple workflow will be created for researchers to submit all reportable events (i.e. SAEs, Protocol Deviations, Audit Visits) for REB review. This will provide improved tracking of safety related events in human research studies. This change will occur in February/March 2019.
2) NIH Conflict of Interest Module: In Spring 2019, there will be some upgrades to the module for Financial Conflict of Interest declarations. Details will follow to those who hold U.S. Federal Funding or other applicable users of this module.
3) Animal Module: ACUC Post Approval Activity Form Revisions: Work has begun on revisions to the Renewal, Amendment and Closing Report forms for the Animal Module. These forms and the related ACUC review processes are being streamlined as the first stage in a complete overhaul of the Animal Module. To ensure these improvements have input from researchers and other stakeholders, both the work undertaken to date and future revisions, REO is establishing a project advisory group. As well consultation sessions about the proposed changes will be held in mid-February. The revisions to the Renewal, Amendment and Closing Report Forms will be implemented in the spring (March/April). Work will then continue on revisions to the Application Form, with a goal of December 2019 for the new AUP form to be implemented.
4) Human and Animal Modules: Grants/REMO Integration: RSO and REO are working with IST to interface the Grants 3.0 data with the online ethics application to provide a more seamless way for researchers to link their funding with their ethics certifications, by choosing from a pick list of their active projects held at RSO. (Timing to be determined).
5) Human Module: U of A/U of C Exchange Project: The Research Ethics Office has been working with NACTRC and our counterparts at the University of Calgary to link our respective online ethics systems to facilitate review and approval of human participant multi-site research involving Edmonton and Calgary researchers. Multi-site research will be enhanced through streamlined ethics review processes and coordinated operational approval process thus reducing the time to initiate research. Subject to external funding, work will begin in July and the enhancement will be operational in October-November.
6) REMO Rebranding (All modules) - Also in the fall, the online system will be re-branded to reflect the fact that it supports modules for Environment, Health and Safety and NIH Financial Conflict of Interest as well as human and animal research ethics. The rebranding work, like the January upgrade, will have some effect on the look and feel of the system.

Reportable Events and recruitment using Be The Cure website have been implemented in the Human Module of the online system. Please see the links for additional information (also available on our Help / Video Tutorials page):
As of December 16, 2019:
New Renewal, Amendment and Closing Report Forms were implemented in the Animal Module. The forms were revised with new questions and information. The process for submitting a renewal and amendment have changed, as well.
As of January 21, 2020:
The Research and Ethics Management Online (REMO) system was being renamed and rebranded.
Initially designed to support the Human Research Ethics Boards and Animal Care and Use Committees, the system now includes modules for NIH Conflict of Interest and Environment Health and Safety (Radiation, Chemical and Bio-safety).
To reflect the wider uses of the system, REMO was renamed ARISE - The Alberta Research Information Services. The rebranding will not affect how you use the system. The web address will be changed, however will be redirected to the new web address (from "remo.ualberta.ca" to "arise.ualberta.ca").

As of September 17, 2021:
We are excited to announce the release of REB Exchange (REBX), a new ethics solution that integrates the ARISE (UAlberta) and IRISS (UCalgary) platforms to enable streamlined multi-site research, with a true single Board of Record model in Alberta.
REBX simplifies collaboration for applicants whose research falls under the Provincial Harmonization Agreement, and is approved by UAlberta HREB or UCalgary CHREB.
- Simply log in to ARISE as you normally would
- Participating sites can be invited to join any project with an approved ethics application

November 2021 - Major upgrade to ARISE coming Jan 15, 2022:
We are pleased to share that a major system upgrade to ARISE will be implemented on January 15, 2022 (ARISE will be unavailable during this time). These upgrades to the smartform (or application form) will improve the user experience, including easier navigation.

- New left side navigator replaces ‘Jump to’ menu
- Contextual ‘you are here’ information visible on every page
- ‘Hide-show errors’ is now ‘Validate’; errors appear marked in the side navigator
- ‘View differences’ is now ‘Compare’; differences appear marked in the side navigator
- Introduction of ‘print packets’; printing parts of the application, ie: reviewer notes
- When you exit ARISE and then return, the system will remember where you left off
- New indicator available to warn when multiple people are working in the same screen
