Jessie-Lee McIsaac, MSc '09, PhD '13
Postdoctoral Fellow
Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre, Dalhousie UniversityIn 2009, Jessie-Lee McIsaac earned her master of science degree in health promotion from the School of Public Health. Four years later, she donned a velvet trimmed doctors' gown as a newly graduated doctor of philosophy in public health sciences. During her PhD program, McIsaac was awarded the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to doctoral students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies.
McIsaac became interested in health promotion during her undergraduate degree program in kinesiology. She applied to the School of Public Health because of the positive reputation of the Centre for Health Promotion Studies. The program was taught by faculty members with expertise in policy and changing the social and built environment, things that McIsaac is passionate about.
McIsaac is now in Nova Scotia as a postdoctoral fellow at Dalhousie University, funded first by Knowledge Translation Canada, and now, by the Canadian Cancer Society. There, she focuses on advancing school health promotion strategies through knowledge translation and exchange.
"It is encouraging to see the collaboration and partnerships that have been established with the various stakeholders in school health," says McIsaac. "When decision-makers use information from research, this can trickle down to the schools, which can support students' health and create healthier futures for us all."
