Tuition and Fees
Enrolling in a graduate program is an investment in your future. As you consider this step, you will want to anticipate the costs of your studies so you can be prepared.
Scholarships, Awards and Assistance
Here's the good news. You have options to help finance your studies with scholarships, awards and other forms of assistance.
In addition to awards offered through the University of Alberta, several outside agencies-such as government and industry-offer graduate student awards. There are additional scholarships available exclusively to students in our faculty.
Scholarships, Awards and Assistance
Some of our students take advantage of teaching or research assistantships to offset the costs of education. Student loans are available from the Canadian and provincial governments based on financial need. The University of Alberta also has limited funding for financial need bursaries and emergency funds.
Tuition, Fees and Other Costs
Tuition and fees will vary depending on several factors, including whether:
- you enroll in a thesis-based or course-based program;
- are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or international student; or
- are studying full time or part time.
Complete and up-to-date information about how to calculate fees for Canadian and international students is available on the website of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.
How Fees are Calculated
Graduate program fees are calculated based on your program of study (ie. course-based or thesis-based) and according to your year of admission. The following three graduate student scenarios describe how program fees are determined:
-
Thesis-Based Programs - For Students Admitted Prior to Fall 2011
-
Thesis-based Programs - For Students Admitted Fall 2011 and Onwards
- Course-based Programs - For All Students
You will also need to consider and prepare for other costs, including:
- Relocation costs, if you are living somewhere besides Edmonton
- Living costs, including accommodation, food and other items
- Non-instructional fees, such as fees for athletics and health services
- Travel and living expenses related to completing a practicum placement in another location
