Scholarships, Awards and Assistance

Assistantships

A select number of graduate research assistantships (RAs) and teaching assistantships (TAs) are available throughout the academic year. 

  • RAs: Faculty members recruit for these positions and funding is provided directly to students.
  • TAs: Instructors may recruit students or choose to advertise TA positions through the School’s 4U@SPH e-newsletter.
Students who have received major awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship, are not eligible for RA funding.

Awards administered by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies

Students may be eligible for awards in several areas of competition. Eligibility requirements, nominations, deadlines and application processes vary. Learn more about department awards and other funding opportunities with FGPS.

Each department sets its own internal deadline for receipt of General Awards applications and students are encouraged to apply well in advance.
Awards administered by the University of Alberta
To be considered for a U of A administered award, students must be admitted to a graduate degree program or have completed an application for admission. Students are nominated by their departments. Learn more.
Dean's Gold Medal Award
Created during the 10th anniversary year of the School of Public Health, this award is intended to recognize a student's superior academic performance. Learn more.
Incentive awards

The university has two top-up awards provided to master's and doctoral students who receive eligible major scholarships. Learn more.

Fellowships, scholarships and awards are available from several outside agencies:

Agencies that fund major awards have strict deadlines for submitting applications. In addition, the School of Public Health has an internal deadline and related process for reviewing applications before they are submitted to external agencies.
