National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG)
3 October 2024
Psychology community members,
The Psychology Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee joins people across Canada in recognizing October 4, 2024 as the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), also known as Sisters in Spirit day. On this day, we remember the lives of the missing and murdered women, girls, and gender diverse people, support grieving families, and take actions to advocate for change.
We invite community members to wear red on Friday October 4th. Red shirts (supporting First Peoples House) are available for purchase at the University of Alberta Bookstore.
To learn more about this day, actions you can take, and events you can attend, explore the following:
- Sisters in Spirit Day event at City Hall
- Information from the National Association of Friendship Centres
- Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

The National Association of Friendship Centres also shares this list of mental health resources and crisis lines.
As a community, we must continue our work to answer the 94 calls to action outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in order to forward the process of reconciliation. As members of the Psychology EDI Committee, we are dedicated to ongoing education, learning, and action. Our aim is to create accessible, inclusive, equitable, and anti-racist classrooms and work environments. We are here to support you and welcome any suggestions or concerns you may have.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Passey (Chair of the Psychology Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee)
