Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day
23 August 2023
Dear students and colleagues,
On August 23rd, 2023, we commemorate Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day, marking a decade since the City
of Edmonton and the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations collaborated to co-host the inaugural
recognition day in 2013. This occasion commemorates the historical signing of Treaty No. 6 between the
Nêhiyaw (Wood Cree, Plains Cree), Nakota Isga (Nakota Sioux), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux), Dené peoples,
and the Crown on August 23rd, 1876.
Treaty No. 6 encompasses the central regions of present-day Alberta and Saskatchewan, including
Amiskwaci-wâskahikan (colonially known as Edmonton) within its boundaries. On this day, we reflect
upon the remarkable achievements and invaluable contributions that local First Nations communities
have woven into the fabric of this region’s growth since the signing of the Treaty. Recognizing these
accomplishments becomes an essential step on the path of reconciliation.
Treaty 6 stands as a symbol of the enduring bond between Indigenous peoples and their ancestral lands,
rich traditions, and vibrant cultures. By honoring this significant day, we propel the journey of
reconciliation forward, paving the way for a future characterized by mutual respect.
