Family Medicine Rotations

All second-year Family Medicine residents in the urban program must complete a minimum eight-week core rural and regional rotation. Rotations can take place at a number of approved sites across Alberta.

During a resident's first year, a member from the Office of Rural & Regional Health (ORRH) will attend the information session to explain the rural rotation requirements. The ORRH member will be able to provide the residents with information and a scheduling package.

These steps will help you schedule your rotation:

  1. Complete the Site Selection Form and submit to your site program administrator by the required date. The Site Selection Form will be administered by the ORRH.
  2. The ORRH will notify the appropriate contacts (ie. preceptor, site contact, accommodation co-ordinator) of the scheduled rotations twice:
    • A notice of all rotations for the academic year is sent before the new academic year begins.
    • A reminder is sent seven weeks prior to the start of the individual rotation.
  3. Following the rotation, each resident is required to complete an evaluation of the rotation, the preceptor, the site, the accommodation. Financial reimbursements will not be considered unless the evaluation has been submitted.
  4. Application for financial reimbursement must be made a maximum of 90 days from the last day of the rotation. Reimbursements will not be considered after this period. Forms are available online and need to be submitted with original receipts (where applicable) to the ORRH for approval and processing.
