Workplace Health and Safety

Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) ensures residents, fellows, and their patients are protected to the fullest possible extent during training. All PGME Trainees must meet AHS Work Health & Safety requirements. If trainees do not meet these required standards, they will not be permitted to continue in their residency or fellowship program.

Immunization updates and respiratory mask fit testing will not be offered at PGME or program orientations. To arrange an appointment prior to orientation for your N95 Fit Test, you can schedule an appointment at your nearest location, or attend a drop-in session.

Contact EDM.AcademicMedicine@ahs.ca or review your AHS Welcome Email/Welcome Package for more information on AHS Workplace Health and Safety, including N95 Fit Testing, Immunization Requirements, and more.

Reporting Workplace Incidents

As you participate in the clinical learning environment, lab environments, and other learning experiences, there is a risk for potential injury or exposure to blood and bodily fluid or non-blood borne infection from patients or lab specimens.

PGME Trainees must follow the reporting procedure below to report workplace incidents, including injuries, exposures, urgent safety issues, and blood and/or body fluid exposure (BBFE).

STEPS

  1. Report the incident to the Charge Nurse and your Staff Attending/Supervisor immediately to complete a Source Risk Assessment and obtain First Aid.
    1. Always follow facility-specific reporting protocols:
      1. Alberta Health Services (AHS) Facility: Call 1-855-450-3619
      2. Covenant Health Facility: Call 1-855-342-8070
  2. Login to your AHS MySafetyNet portal to report and and manage work-related incidents, hazards, illnesses, and injuries. You can also connect with ability management if you are ill or injured outside of work.
  3. Complete the online University of Alberta Incident Report.
  4. Complete the Alberta WCB Worker's Report of Injury.
