Honors in Research Designation

This program is designed for students who are looking for in-depth exposure to research during their Medical Laboratory Science education. Students complete six units of course weight during one summer in a research course offered by the Division. Successful students receive recognition on their transcripts and degrees through the notation, 'With Honors in Research.'

Normally, students begin the program the summer following completion of their clinical year (Year 3 of the MLS program). Research projects are completed during the next academic session (fall and winter terms, Year 4 of the MLS program) during the six-credit research course.

Objectives

To encourage awareness of the importance of basic and clinical biomedical research to students interested in pursuing an advanced research degree upon graduation and students wishing to seek employment as research technologists.

The program is open to all students registered in Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Alberta.

What does Honors in Research offer you?

  1. The "Honors in Research" designation formally recognizes academic training in the area of research.
  2. Active participation in a well-designed research project will enhance your critical thinking skills, writing skills and technical skills. This will be an asset in any career that you follow.

  3. This experience will give you an opportunity to assess your interest and aptitude for research. It may provide you with the stimulus to enter a graduate program leading to an MSc or PhD.

  4. When you have successfully completed this program, your research training will be recognized formally by the "With Honours in Research" notation to your BSc in MLS (both degree parchment and university transcript). Such recognition will improve your competitiveness in gaining employment as a technologist in research or development.
