The Supportive Role of Technology in the Future of Psychiatry 
with Dr. Xin-Min Li, MD, PhD, FRCPC

Current challenges and the future of psychiatry will be explored using schizophrenia and depression as a case study. Using AI and data science, we will explore how these technologies can provide insights into past and current diagnoses and treatments of mental illness.  Specifically, we will explore how a supportive text messaging program provided an effective supportive treatment therapy for mental health patients during covid.

Dr. Li completed his MD and PhD in Physiology at the Norman Bethune University in Changchun, China.  He did a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Saskatchewan and a fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He then completed a clinical residency in Psychiatry and served as the Director of the Neuropsychiatry Research Unit (2000 to 2007) at the University of Saskatchewan. He was then appointed at the University of Manitoba as Professor and Ruth Hurd Research Chair, Medical Director of the International Medical Graduate Program, Director of the Neuroscience Research Program and Assistant Dean, International Medical Education. 

In 2013, he joined the University of Alberta, as Chair of Psychiatry and Capital Health Chair in Mental Health Research. Since 2020, he has served as Associate Dean, International Relations.

Dr. Li has been a leader in advancing the theory of white matter dysfunction and neurodegeneration in psychiatric disorders.
