Proctorio

Proctorio is a software (done through a Google Chrome extension) that permits students to write their eClass Moodle exams securely from anywhere in the world, on their own laptop device. Proctorio records the student’s computer screen, microphone for sound, and utilizes their webcam to record the environment view while the student is taking the exam. These recordings are reviewed through AI and flagged by Proctorio. The videos are available through a link to the “Protorio Gradebook” within the eClass quiz. The Chrome extension creates these links and has access to the data collected during the proctored exams. The extension must be used to review exams.

Who can use Proctorio?

Students who live far outside of Edmonton and are taking online courses prefer to write their exams via Proctorio as it allows them to stay home and avoid travelling to write their exams. Some students study online from as far away as Hong Kong! For these students, Proctorio is generally more affordable than a local proctor.

How does Proctorio work?

Students who elect to use Proctorio to write their exams require a reliable internet connection, compatible laptop device, webcam, and microphone.

The software is located directly in their eClass course. The student will navigate to the exam and be directed to download the Proctorio Chrome extension. Once downloaded, they are required to complete a few validation steps (microphone check, webcam check, ID photo, room scan). When setup is complete, it will prompt the student to begin the exam.

What is the cost of Proctorio?

If a department has approved the use of Proctorio for their exams, the fee is $9 per student, per exam. In this case, students may have the option of writing their exam in person at the LAC or from home using Proctorio.

Should a student NOT be able to attend their exam in person at the LAC because of extreme circumstances, they may have the option to write the exam from home using Proctorio. The instructor would need to approve the student’s remote exam request. The fee is $15 and would be covered by that student through our LAC online store (Marketplace).

How do I book a Proctorio exam?

The LAC’s administrative team assists with booking the exam, and supports students with basic access and troubleshooting support Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm (excluding Statutory Holidays).

All technical issues are passed onto Proctorio directly, who can, through remote device access, troubleshoot incompatible computer settings, microphone and webcam issues with a student’s device directly. Proctorio is available for technical support 24/7 via live chat.
